Lots of News

You're probably sick of this soccer ball by now.

Hey everyone, back here at Just Another Soccer Fan. Lot's have been going on, so its time to talk soccer! Who though it would be this busy after WPS? I'm not complaining, in fact I'm pleasantly surprised! Here we go:

UEFA Loser Play-offs- Switzerland played Denmark today in their final match of the first round of play-offs. The first leg ended in favor of Switzerland at 3-1. Today, the match stayed at a 0-0 deadlock, which means Switzerland moves through to the 2nd round of play-offs. There, they'll be meeting up with Italy, and will face off against them in 2 matches, the first on October 23rd, and the 2nd on October 27th. Whoever triumphs will face off against the 3rd place CONCACAF team for the final Women's World Cup spot.

Jim Gabarra's move- He left the Washington Freedom a little while back, maybe a week or so after the Championship game. It turns out that now he's been named the Head Coach for Sky Blue FC. I thought he was leaving coaching altogether, but he leaves just to go to another team. What a turn-coat! No, just kidding, I wish him luck on Sky Blue. I'm sure Washington will find a great coach as well in this off-season!

Oceania 3rd Place Game/Final- tomorrow marks the end of Women's World Cup qualifying for the OFC. In the 3rd place game (which is more of a consolation match than anything, since only the regional Champion will be heading to Germany come 2011) will have the Cook Islands facing off against the Solomon Islands. In the final, New Zealand will be facing off against Papua New Guinea for the sole rights to head to Germany. The winner will be named Champion of the OFC, and will get a one way ticket to Germany in 2011. The loser will go home empty handed. New Zealand has looked super strong, as they've defeated all of their opponents by more than 6 goals in each match. Papua New Guinea will be looking to pull off the upset though. We'll find out what happens tomorrow, but my prediction is that New Zealand is way too strong to lose to anyone in the OFC. Good luck to both of them!

Hope you enjoyed this miscellaneous bunch of news! I'll be writing a little review of the USA vs. China PR match that took place yesterday, so check back here in a few to read that if you'd like.

Until then,

Denise
